Visiting Researcher Support Program

APPLICATION INFORMATION
The International Information Science Foundation (IISF) in Japan has been supporting the travel expenses of outstanding young computer scientists who wish to visit Japan for research purposes. Researchers satisfying the following requirements are invited to apply.
1. Activities Supported by IISF
- Presentation at an international conference on computing science held in Japan.
- Conducting research at a Japanese university or research institute.
2. Eligibility Requirements
- The applicant should be a scientist doing fundamental research in computer science at a university or research institute (including graduate studies).
- The applicant must be a citizen of a country other than Japan, and should be at most 40 years old.
- If presenting at an international conference, the paper must have been accepted before applying to IISF.
- If visiting a university or research institute, the application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation (invitation) from a host researcher at that university or institute. Obtaining such an invitation is the responsibility of the applicant, not of IISF.
3. Research Fields
Applicants whose research field falls under the general heading of information or computer science will be considered. These fields include (but are not restricted to) Computer Graphics, Computer Network, Computing System, Computing Theory, Databases, Intelligent System, Robotics, and Softwareand Software Science.
4. Grant Details
The Grant: The amount of support is fixed, and is based strictly upon the location of the applicant's own university or institute. It is determined by taking into account the cost of economy airfare along the shortest route between the point of departure and Japan, and living expenses for about one week. Even if the duration of stay of the applicant is longer than one week, or the applicant is required to travel domestically within Japan, the amount will not be increased.

5. Method of Payment:
The support will be paid after arriving in Japan, through the organizing committee of the international conference or the host scientist in Japan, as appropriate.
6. Required Documentation
The following is a list of the documents required of the applicant. Any submission deviating significantly from these guidelines will not be considered.
- The application form (PDF) (WORD), form completed in Japanese or in English (typewritten).
- A recent photograph of the applicant (passport-style, taken within the past year).
- A list of research activities, including main research papers and books published with full bibliographical information.
- If attending a conference:
- e call for papers.
- A copy of an acceptance letter or an invitation letter.
- A letter of recommendation from the Japanese committee chair.
- If visiting a Japanese researcher:
- A copy of any correspondence with the researcher concerning the invitation to visit.
- A letter of recommendation from the Japanese researcher.
- A recommendation letter from the chairperson/dean/head of the applicant's home institute.
7. Application Procedure
- All correspondence with IISF should be by E-mail, FAX or letter.
- Applications made while in Japan will not be accepted.
- An acknowledgement will be sent on receipt of your application by e-mail.

Visiting schedule July 1, 2019 - March 31, 2020 Deadline May 31, 2019
8. Screening Process and Notification of the Result
Examination of the application will be made by the selection committee
of IISF based on an evaluation of its academic merit and quality.
The applicant and the host will be notified as to the result approximately
one month after the deadline.
Details of the screening process will not be announced, and no inquiries
concerning the decision will be accepted.
9. Withdraw of the Grant
In any of the situations described below, the foundation may revoke the grant, in which case any funds already received must be returned.
- The discovery of facts inconsistent with the application requirements detailed above.
- The discovery of false statements or unilateral modification of statements in the application.
- Failure to notify the foundation of additional support for travel expenses provided by other institutions or agencies.

held are requested. However, the most recent degrees and position should
be stated first.

If you have applied for support from any other organization
for transportation expenses to visit Japan concerning this application,
please specify the name of the granting agency, and the date by which
the decision should be known.
Item (14)
If for some reason you are unable to provide all the requested documentation
with your application, please indicate on the form the date IISF can expect
to receive them.
