Visiting Researcher Support Program


APPLICATION INFORMATION

The International Information Science Foundation (IISF) in Japan has been supporting the travel expenses of outstanding young computer scientists who wish to visit Japan for research purposes. Researchers satisfying the following requirements are invited to apply.

T. Activities Supported by IISF

  1. Conducting research at a Japanese university or research institute.
  2. Presentation at an international conference on computer science held in Japan.e.

U. Eligibility Requirements

  1. The applicant should be a scientist doing fundamental research in computer science at a university or research institute (including graduate studies).
  2. The applicant must be a citizen of a country other than Japan, and should be at most 40 years old.
  3. Those who wish to conduct research must have been accepted in a advance by a host scientist at a university or institute in Japan to do the research.
  4. Those who wish to present at an international conference must have the paper having been accepted before applying to IISF.

V. Research Fields

Applicants whose research field falls under the general heading of information or computer science will be considered. These fields include (but are not restricted to) Computer Graphics, Computer Network, Computing System, Computing Theory, Databases, Intelligent System, Robotics, and Software Science.

W. Grant Details

The Grant: The amount of support is fixed as below. The amount is determined to take into account the cost of economy airfare for the shortest route between the point of departure and Japan. The amount of support will not be raised even if the expenses exceed the below amount.

X. Method of Payment:

The support will be paid after arriving in Japan, through the host scientist or the organizing committee of the international conference in Japan, as appropriate.

Y. Required Documents

The following is a list of the documents required of the applicant. Any submission deviating from these guidelines will not be considered.

  1. The application form (PDF) (WORD) completed in English or in Japanese (typewritten).
  2. A list of research activities, including main research papers and books published. The list should be at most 3 pages.
  3. A letter of recommendation from the chairperson/dean/head of the applicant's home institute.
  4. For those who wish to conduct research:
    1. A copy of any correspondence (letter or e-mail) with the host scientist in Japan concerning the visit.
    2. A letter of invitation from the host scientist in Japan.
  5. For those who wish to present at a conference:
    1. A copy of call for papers. However, this is not necessary when you noted the URL of Call for Papers in the application form if any.
    2. A copy of an acceptance letter or an invitation letter, and the review from the conference.

Z. Application Procedure

  1. All correspondence with IISF should be by E-mail.
  2. The applicant who is already residing in Japan during the conference or during the research period is not allowed to apply.
  3. An acknowledgement will be sent on receipt of the application by e-mail.
    If the receipt is not acknowledged within 1 week, please contact us by e-mail.
  4. Applications should be received by IISF according to the following deadline:
  5. Visiting schedule August 1, 2023 - March 31, 2024
    Deadline June 30, 2023

[. Screening Process and Notification of the Result

Examination of the application will be made by the selection committee of IISF based on an evaluation of its academic merit and quality.
The applicant and the host will be notified as to the result approximately by the end of July.
Details of the screening process will not be announced, and no inquiries concerning the decision will be accepted.

 Additional Remarks:

  1. The applicant needs to inform IISF of receiving additional grant from other organizations. This does not include any scholoarships.
  2. In the situation where the applicant is no longer able to come to Japan, the applicant must inform IISF immediately. In case it occurs after receiving the grant, the grant must be returned.
  3. The personal data obtaind through the application will be used for the purpose of screening process.
  4. The names, organizations, and visiting institutions or the attending conferences of those who received the grant will be posted on our web site.
  5. The recipiet is required to submit a report of the research or the conference.The report will be also posted on our web site.

\. Withdrawal of the Grant

In any of the situations described below, IISF may revoke the grant, in which case any funds already received must be returned.

  1. The discovery of facts inconsistent with the application requirements detailed above.
  2. The discovery of false statements or unilateral modification of statements in the application.
  3. Failure to notify IISF of additional support for travel expenses provided by other institutions or agencies.
  4. Failure to visit Japan for the purposes stated in the application.

Section 2 (pp.1,2)

Item (6)
Please designate either your work or home address as the mailing address. If left unspecified, correspondence will be forwarded to your work address.
Item (9), (10)
The academic degree obtained and the main positions held are requested. The most recent degree and position should be stated first.
Item (13)
If you have applied or are going to apply for support from any other organization for transportation expenses to visit Japan , please specify the name of the granting agency, and the date by which the result will be notified.

Section 3 (p.3)

Item (2)
For those who conduct research, please write briefly the purpose and the backgraound of the research and the relationship with the host scientist.
For those who present at the conference, please write briefly the purpose of the conference itself.

Item (3)
For those who conduct research, please write the outline of your research plan.
For those who present at the conference, please write the outline of the paper to be presented at the conference.

Section 4 (p.4)

Please note this Section 4 should be completed ONLY for those who wish to present at the international conference held in Japan.

 e. Please write the URL of Call for Papers if any.
   Then the copy of CFP is not needed.
 f. Please inform us if the conference is un-referred.

The application forms and attached documents and materials will not be returned.
